Elsa is reading The Littles and her genre is realistic fiction because there are people in it. But the fiction part is there are tails, they live in walls and are 6 inches tall. Her juicy words are marvelous and iron. We decided that a better genre for this book is fantasy because they have tails.

Sasha's reading Ghost versus Ghost. There are these girl and boy scouts trying to earn badges. There are boy and girl scouts all around the world. They earn badges when they learn something new.

Ben's reading Tigers at Twilight. They lost Teddy the dog, but when they were in the forest they found him while they were walking. There are a lot of dogs that are stray or lost like Teddy was in the world. The Humane Society, Kennelwood and the APa are organizations that help find homes for lost dogs.

Annie's reading Farmer Boy. There are these boys that are huge called the Hand Scrabble Boys and they chop down trees. People are chopping down trees in the rainforest. That is a problem because we are losing oxygen and it causes forest fires.

Tatum is reading Alone in the Night and Jasmine really wants a cat and Tatum really wants a cat. That is text-to-self.

Hailey is reading A Girl's Best Friend and has a text-to-self connection because in this story they find a note in front of their house and she found a note in front of her door! She has one tricky word extracurricular.

Paige is reading Harry Potter Goblet of Fire and can't think of a connection but recommends Ramona's World to Sebastian.

Sebastian finished Guinea Dog!!!! He got 90% WOOOOOOOOO! He's looking for a white sticker book and our friends recommend 39 Clues, Boxcar Children, The Postcard, and iCarly. He's not sure if this is text-to-self or text-to-world but a week ago he did this marble run thing and failed but then it turned out to be something better. In this book, Ruffles gets a Guinea pig and it turns out to be better than a dog. Guess it's text-to-self.

Sebastian is reading Guinea Dog and his text to world connection is that in the book right now Ruffles just got a guinea dog and Sebastian's cousin just got a cat and in the story it was probably 2 months ago too.

Kai is reading Sharks and the World's Scariest Sea Monsters. In the story on one page they're talking about some scientists going into the sea to find out more about the ocean and that has happened.

Jack is reading I Wanna Iguana and Jack's text-to-world connection is that there is an iguana in the book and in real life. His cousin's neighbor has a lizard and iguanas are lizards.

Tatum is reading Alone in the Night and her text-to-world is that Jasmine and her family are taking care of a cat and a lot of people in the world are taking care of cats like her mom and dad's friend Deb has two cats. Audrey is reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and this text reminds her of The Lightning Thief because there is a thief in both books.

Kai is reading 3-D Thrillers, Sharks in the World and it reminds of him of another book about sharks he read because they tell you facts about sharks in this book and there were facts about sharks in the other book.

Harrison is reading A to Z Mysteries, The Missing Mummy and he has a connection with Diary of a Wimpy Kid Cabin Fever because in the book it said that Dink's eyes were wide open when Mr. Tweed said there was an earthquake that killed all the people and turned into mummies. In Diary of a Wimpy Kid the illustrations show Greg with his eyes wide open too.

Sebastian is reading Guinea Dog and it reminds him of Bad Kitty because they are both funny.

Sammy is reading Oook and Glok and it reminds him of Bad Kitty because they are both comics.

Amber's reading Funny Frank. He is a chick. He wants to swim like the ducks. He doesn't have webbed feet. He tried 3 times. The farmer and his wife use a water bottle to teach him how to swim so he could float. This reminds her when she was little she had a life jacket to swim. It reminds her of when her dad taught her how to swim without a life jacket.

Bjorn's reading Diary of a Wimpy Kid the Last Straw. The guy is bad at soccer. He struggles with listening at practice and so does Bjorn (he feels). Bjorn went to Jack N's house and played in his fun basement.

Harper's reading The Bernstein Bears Almanac. Sister Bear has a brother and Harper has 3 brothers. She has no sisters and same with Harper. They both have parents. Harper had a sleep over with her grandpa. Her brother stole her pillow while she was sleeping!

Zaire is reading Megamind The Novel and the setting she'd like to be in Metrocity because it is a real cool place until Megamind takes over. It's really cool because it has gigantic buildings, almost 20 Art museums and 1000 houses.

Paige would want to be in the Griffyndor common room because there is a really big fire and the pictures on the walls talk and move.

Sam's reading Reading Pearl Harbor. He learned they needed a lot of defensive from the Japanese. In football the offensive line is the defense for the quarterback. Just like in his book.

Bjorn's reading The Knight at Dawn. This person fell out of a window into a pool. It reminded him of when he tripped and fell into a pool.

Jackson's reading Alvin and the Chipmunks Christmas. Alvin felt free on his vacation and so did he when we went to Turks and Caicos.

Jack M's reading Bats. Bats have wings but arms in the wings. We do too but not the wing part.

Sasha's reading Judy Moody Gets Famous. Judy's friend Jessica picture was on the newspaper. Sasha was in the news for the basketball game.

Zaire is reading Megamind and she has one juicy word, observatory. This book connects with her brother because he finally cracked her password and Megamind finally took over Metrocity. Marks and Richie is 10 feet tall, she has a red velvet dress, black high heels with straps on them and she has very short hair. She has tan skin.

Sebastian is reading Guinea Dog and it's like his weekend because this weekend we visited our cousin's cat. Ruffles has black hair and tan skin. He has one juicy word, quickly and one tricky word, uncomfortably.

Kai is still reading Amazing Wolfs, Dogs and Foxes and he connects to his story because this week they played a lot with their dogs.

Tatum is reading Alone in the Night and this weekend a couple of her dogs jumped up at her when she came home like when Star jumps up through the fence in her book. Star is a cat, her fur has stripes and the color of the stripes are orange, light brown, black gold and tan colored. She has a pink nose, black sparkling eyes, black striped ears and a black tail with white dots. Tatum's tricky words are tabby, and bathe. Her juicy word is recognized.

Hailey is reading True... Sort of. In this story they made hot chocolate and on Sunday Hailey drank hot chocolate.

Chase is reading Sharks and the World's Scariest Sea Monsters. On Friday he went swimming and sharks swim in the water too!

Sammy is reading White House White Out and they can't find KC's dog which is spooky because he's trying to find him and he's howling back but he's in the van.

Tatum is reading Camp Ghostaway and the scary part in the book is where the ghost goes "woooo" with the girls waking up in the tent. The dog chased the ghost.

Zaire is reading Megamind. There's not really anything spooky but it's really crazy because there's this superhero, who's actually born to be a superhero. When megamind was a baby he was trying to go into a real house but then the real superhero bombed his rocket. So megamind went to jail and raised as a villian.

Audrey is reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Sparkling, zooming and constantly are her juicy words. The thing that's spooky about her book is that a boy invited them to this place and told the teacher that they'd be in there and Harry escaped. It was kind of spooky because the teacher was looking for him and the castle was really dark at midnight.

Harrison is reading A to Z Mysteries the Haunted Hotel. The thing that makes the book good that the author does is that he makes it easier to read and the letters are dark black sometimes. There are a lot of commas, periods and capitals. It's tempting and you want to know what happens next.

Samantha is reading Encyclopedia Brown Tracks Them Down and she likes the author because the author writes down really good mysteries and all kinds of juicy stuff. The mysteries make me want to read even more and it gets really exciting.

On Winter Break...

Tatum went to Arkansas for New Years, stayed at her Grandma's and went on her cousin's trail he made in their backyard. Her cousin came for Christmas too.

Zaire went to Holiday Camp, went bowling and threw family parties!

Elsa had a playdate with Jack G. and on Christmas went to her Grandma and Grandpa's house. For New Year's eve she went to her friend the Jones' house.

Jack went to Sam's house and played and on Christmas he built a lego. One day after Christmas he started Diary of a Wimpy Kid!

Sammy went to Beau Mache (a French restaurant). He also went to Winter Wonderland, the Botanical Gardens and Laluma.

Kai had his birthday on the 23rd. On New Year's eve he had a friend over and shot off fireworks. On the 27th he had his brother's birthday.

Chase watched the ball drop in New York and he watched the Winter Classic, (the Rangers won). That's about it! Happy 2012!

Alex went to Holiday Camp too and she went shopping, played with her friend Clair and two other girls that live across her backyard. She also spent time with her family.

On the 28th Paige went to this pool in this hotel in Chicago. On New Year's Eve they shot off fireworks and that's about it!

Hailey went skiing and met her cousin. The day after Christmas she opened her presents.

Samantha had a two night sleepover on January 1. On New Year's Eve she celebrated most of the time of New Year's at Tommy's house. On the 21st she celebrated the 1st night of Hannukah.

On the 1st of January Audrey had a playdate with Emma. On the 18th her grandmother came.

Sebastian went bowling the day after Christmas. The day after that he went ice skating with his cousins. For 10 of the days of vacation he hung out.

Over this break Tommy went to Colorado, went skiing for two of the days, watched a movie and went to this really good restaurant called Smash Burger.

Khari went to the Coca Cola factory in Atlanta, Georgia and tasted 60 different sodas!

Isabella drove to New Jersey to see her cousins the day after Christmas.

Jack N went to Florida. On the first day he found 21 of his friends there! The whole trip he got to play with them and it was fun.

Jack H got 2 new jerseys on Christmas Eve. He wore them everyday and slept in them.

Bjorn went to South Africa. He was pretty miserable on the 2 day flight. His stomach nearly exploded on the half way mark. He nearly died of hunger because the airplane food was pretty gross. On the flight back from Chicago to St. Louis. He got mad when the speaker when it said we will be landing shortly. He was enjoying his nap!

Jackson went snorkeling with his dad and saw a puffer fish and a HUGE fish. He went on a submarine and saw turtles and two more puffer fish. There was a game room with only xBox games. He went there 3 times.

Sam left Florida for Houston on his way to San Diego. In Houston he wanted to go to Austin because its closer to California.

Olivia went to her cousin's house on Christmas Eve. She brought presents from Grandma and played with them.

Amber stayed home. On the 23rd she got her tooth pulled. Tomorrow she's getting fitted for a spacer. Dentist thinks her mouth is small. She thinks she might have to get a retainer. The dentist gave her $1. The tooth fairy got a pearl ring and diamond earrings.

Harper had a great break. Her brother's got an xBox 360. She saw Beauty and the Beast. She went to Santa's Magical Kingdom with lots of lights. There was a sign with elves working. She went to see her cousins. She hung out with the adults. Last year her elf put on a barbie dress and was hanging out with her barbies.

Ben went to see Tin Tin. In the previews he was tired. They were loud. During the movie he didn't like it so he wanted to go to sleep during it. He reached his hand out and his mom asked if he wanted popcorn. Then he couldn't go back to sleep. His rib was smooshed.

Sasha had a playdate with Alex. They went to wildlights in the zoo. She was playing barbies and singing songs. This morning she saw a rattlesnake on her balcony. She saw scales and then a tail. She was ready to get out of there and go to school!

Gretchen found 2 apples with reindeer bites on them on Christmas night. She went outside with the dogs at her uncles and she got locked out. She was a bit cold!

Isabel went to her Grandma's house and played with her cousins on Christmas Eve. She had roast beef, green beans and mashed potatoes. She's a great cook!

On Wednesday Tatum's mom is going to drive them to her grandparent's farm. Her cousin's are coming and they'll have Thanksgiving there.

Hailey is basically doing nothing for Thanksgiving.

Samantha's mom is going to bring her to her grandma and grandpa's for Thanksgiving and she gets to swim.

Samantha is reading iCarly I'm Your Biggest Fan. The setting is at school in the hall where all the lockers are. The lockers are blue and the thing you open with looks sort of like ours, ones that are circles. They are sort of small. She has two tricky words, her first one is unpredictable which Paige told us means you don't know what will happen next. Her other one is condescendingly. Sebastian noticed that descend means go down.

Sebastian is about to finish the Ninth Nugget. He has three tricky words hobbling, combination, and constellations. Paige told us the hobbling means you can barely walk like limping. Alex told us that combination means mixing stuff together. Ian told us that constellations are stars that make a picture. OH YEA!!! The setting is a farm, woods and village. Today when he was reading they were in the village.

Halloween Thrills

Gretchen went trick or treating with her friend Ella and she got pink plastic teeth. Jack H got 2 little balls with college basketball teams on them. Sasha got 66 candies! Isabel had a good Halloween. Ben saw a policeman and gave him a bag a potato chips. Jack M was with his friends and they downstairs and played. Olivia got 40 pieces of candy! When she went to one house she got a nose that when you squeeze snot comes out of it. EWWW!!! Amber went to a carnival after trick or treating. One house had soda. She chose root beer. Tasty! Sam went around to a lot of houses. There were a lot of people who were not there :( so he only got to tell jokes to a few people. He got 39 pieces of candy. Harper had a good Halloween, but one lady had a bag of candy corns. She took a ladle with candy and put it in her basket. Khari had about 97 pieces of candy. He went to all the houses. Jackson went to Jack's house to trick or treat. His friends were fast and left him behind. He kept up and he found them. Isabella got to trick or treat with her neighbors. They were the first ones out. They went all night! As she came home, a cop came with caramel apples. She was excited. She came outside with her boots. She got one, but her brother didn't. She gave it to her brother. Bjorn had an awesome. He trick or treated twice! He hit 10-15 houses. The 2nd time he hit every house. When they got back he was horsing around with a whiffle ball. Sarah brought two pillowcases just in case. They went to 100 houses! They almost couldn't fit it in both pillowcases. She's still counting. Jack N like getting the mini college baseballs. They were playing in the basement. Then he went out trick or treating again! Annie got over 100 pieces of candy! She went with Elsa and went in her old neighborhood. She saw her old friend Cindy.

Field Trip Etiquette

Chase says that he's been on lots of field trips and everyone gets loud on the bus and you shouldn't because it annoys the driver which can lead to an accident. You can talk to your neighbor but no yelling up to the front seat.

Jack says that we can talk quietly to our neighbor but not yelling, not like in lunch.

Ian thinks that we should be quiet like Chase says but we don't need to clap people's hands on the seats. You can use sign language.

Harrison says don't talk to the person behind or in front of you.

Samantha thinks that we should be careful in the bus because there are no seatbelts. Sit on your sitting bones NOT on your knees or something or stand up.

Tatum thinks that you should be really not messing around with the person across from you because it could trip someone.

Tommy says, don't sit next to your best friend because you are going to talk to them.

Luiza thinks you should not yell at the Symphony it will disturb the people playing the music.

Audrey thinks you should not kick the seat in front of you on the bus and when you get to the Symphony clapping is ok but don't yell.

Alden says that when you are in the bus don't throw around your sweater.

Paige says people play with the armrests so don't do that.

Anna says don't turn around when you are in a seat because you might fall.

Hailey says don't kick the seat in front of you because it might feel uncomfortable and annoying to the person in front of you. It will disturb them.

Kai says at the Symphony just look at them and be respectful.

Alex says that on the bus it doesn't matter where you sit. It's alright to sit next to a best friend too.

Annie is reading Little Women. Her words are creep and disagreement. She pictures the Joe how she is going out of the house when she is creeping. She pictures the two people fighting in the disagreement.

Isabel is reading Terrier and the Tinsel. She found 50, but her 2 words are responsible and delighted. The character is really taking care of his stuff because he is responsible. Her character was really, really happy so she sees her character is smiling and jumping up and down.

Luiza says that we have clicker quizzes in second grade. We have Weekly Readers to read.
Jack M says that every morning we come in and read.
Gretchen says that we are doing a project where we are trying to sell the school.
Amber wants him to know that we are making video games, TV shows and Scavenger Hunts for the open house so people will want to come to MICDS.
Isabella wants him to know about our Weekly Reader. This week was about Nocturnal Animals that are active at night like snakes, owls and bats.
Alex wants him to know about centers. We go to all 3 of our teachers. We have phonics and finding juicy words (words that splatter over you).
Anna wants Landon to know about the Marble Jar. When we get compliments we get marbles and stickers.
Annie wants to tell him about our jobs. One job is bringing home a flip camera and teach how to do stuff. Then people can watch it.
Isabel talks about taking an AR quiz after we read books.

Elsa is reading Little Lucky and it's just right for her because it's not too hard and it's not too easy. All of the words are ones she can read.

Ian is reading I love Spiders. It's not too hard and it is just right for him. It has 15 pages. Some of the words are hard and most of the words that he can read. There are 2 words he is confused with.

Jack is reading Diary of a Worm and he knows that it is just right for him becasue his mom read it to him and he thought he could read it so he did that today.

Alex is reading Judy Moody. She knows it is just right becasue she only get a few words wrong.

Luiza is reading Magic Pony and she knows it is just right becasuse she read the back and it is the right size.

Sebastian thinks his book is just right when he understands the story and knows what is happening.

Paige remembers the 5 finger rule when if you miss a word, you put up a finger. If you get to 5, you need to choose another book.

JN's reading Where the Wild Things Are. He has read it a lot and really likes it. Max likes to make up dinosaur-monster like things. His room turns into a forest. He has his own boat. He goes to where the monster-things live. JN would get on the boat and would love to be the king of the island.

TS is reading Spring Sprouts. Its about a group of scouts who are going to plant sees. They want to plant the biggest one. By mistake, she puts it on the ruler. SS is not sure what will happen next.

HG is reading a part of Diary of a Wimpy Kid. She's reading what they are saying in the bubbles. Sometimes they have been screaming and sometimes funny so far.

SL just finished a book about the Superbowl Book. This book is interesting, sporty and fun. Did you know that the Green Bay Packers won the first two super bowls?

EM is reading What is That? She thinks the pictures are really funny. The book makes you laugh and giggle.

BS is reading The Boxcar Children The Mystery of the Spider's Clue and he just got to a funny chapter called the Needle In the Haystack. He's wondering what in the world is this going to be about?

Kai is reading Frog and Toad and he just finished it but didn't get to get to the quiz because the computer was taking so long to load. He didn't need to picture anything because there were a lot of pictures.

Chase was reading Captain Underpants and it's really funny. He was thinking of this guy who's really funny but he's called Professor Poopy Pants. He was evil. He had a black shirt with his face on it, green pants, evily shoes like with lightning strikes on it. Shoes that make him take over the world.

Zaire is reading Junie B. Jones Birthday. She was picturing how Junie B. Jones was looking. She pictured a really crazy skirt with Tyranosauras Dottie on it. Her shirt was pink with a dinosaur on it. Her shoes were purple and pink with flowers on them.

Sammy just finished The Magic School Bus and he didn't picture anything because the book had pictures. They went into the ocean.

Alex is reading Scooby Doo Sea Monster Scare. She just finished it and got 4 out of 5! There were pictures on every page. She pictured this girl that had brown hair, a pink shirt, brown pants and she didn't have any shoes on because she was at the beach.

Hailey is reading Bad Kitty and she was picturing the cat that had black fur, a little bit of white on her neck.

Sebastian is reading Nate the Great (not sure which one). He pictured Nate the Great with yellow hair, a really white face, a grey shirt and blue pants.

Anna is reading The Schoolbus Driver from the Black Lagoon. She pictured that this little boy's dog got run over by the bus.

Samantha just finished Little Bill The Meanest Thing to Say and she pictured that Little Bill was hiding under his bed because he was so mad he didn't want anyone to see him. She got 100% on the quiz!!!

Ian is reading Skunk in the Bathtub. This boy has a magic wand. He gardens the plants. Then he gets dirty. He goes to the bathtub. In the bathtub he wants a duck. He doesn't get a duck he gets a truck. Then he gets a drum, then a grasshopper. He was picturing all of it in his head! He was seeing it in his mind.

Harrison is reading The World According to Humphrey. He just finished the 1st chapter which is the return of something. Now he's reading Night LIfe. He's picturing Humphrey which is a hamster. He pictures him yellow and white. White for his stomach and a white stripe on his back and his head. His back is yellow. He has pink feet and hands. He also has a little purple notebook with black rims to keep it together and white and blue pieces of paper.

Tommy is reading The Penguins of Madagascar. Skipper has an orange beak, light eyes with black dots in the center, and white and black skin.
